CENTRAL MARESHOW Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, 10-21-2006

Her battery was far from empty. Thanks to a iron clad trot

with lots of power from the hind-quarter engine which never

let her down, the Teunis daughter Dryske (damsire Djurre)

laughed at the competition as she left all of them behind her,

including reigning champion Gonda F.T. (Onne) and the new

Youth Champion Rebekka G.T. (Doaitsen x Folkert).

Dryske got the title of Grand Champion for the first time in 2004,

this time her owner and breeder, van der Wal from Bozum, watched

with great pride as she trotted the honorary lap for the second time

in her young life with that magical Champion ribbon. A magnificent,

magical moment!

Emotions

Earlier on this nerve-racking day Dryske was pronounced Model, an honor given to only 11 mares that day! Thanks to a good IBOP (80,6 points), her title of Model was definite. Her homage was one filled with emotions, no wonder that we caught the owners wiping away a tear or two (and we didn’t only catch the owners doing that!). Next to her stood the Sumarreheide Champion, the luxurious yearling Rebekka G.T. (Doaitsen x Folkert) owned by G. Talma from Kollumerzwaag.

Rebekka won the title of Youth Champion in a very tough field. A yearling with a phenomenal trot, superb in balance, tall in the front and with a good rear leg. A joy to watch! Rebekka also became the Grand Reserve Champion. Quite an achievement because the Blauwhuis Champion, Martsje D. (Onne x Nykle) owned by Klaas van der Ploeg from the United States (the breeder of Doaitsen who, without a doubt, had a great day), was beforehand, the all time favorite.

Jildau and the Model's parade

The Champion of the 3 yr olds at this Central Mareshow 2006; Jildau fan Nes (Jasper x Hearke pref.), among breeders also known as the rare beauty and full sister of Dries, competed till the last  round in the champions ring. Jildau’s mother, Hearke daughter Hiltsje fan Nes was also in Leeuwarden to take part in the Model Mare’s parade, an admirable new initiative sponsored by the German breeder Jöriskes, who owns the beautiful two year old Mira-Viktoria vom Lindenbaum (Tsjalke x Feitse), the reserve Champion of the Fokdag (keuring) in the Southern village Helden-Panningen.

This parade was one of the highlights of the CK, where the elder mares gave us all goose-bumps. Foeke van der Velde from Terwispel showed both his Kora model/pref., (twenty years old!) and Olcha model/pref., 18 years old. Hearke daughter Kora proved that she definitely wasn’t rusty in her trot, Olcha (Sape’s mother) is still quite a picture as well. Both had amazing IBOP results……84 and 90 points!

Breathtaking trot

Totally breathtaking as she trotted by was the 15 yr old, model preferent Zita H. (Naen x Tjimme) owned by Doorn, Schiedam, from the breeding farm of Hooijmans, Kerkdriel. That is the perfect example of how all 15 yr olds should trot! Also the 12 yr old model mare Hanke van de Lutjeshoeve (Pike x Oege pref), the mother of the renowned Kootwijk Champion; Sanne van de Lutjeshoeve (Doaitsen), showed her best side. In type Hanke is quite baroque but typically Friesian and with the very wanted feathering and full main and tail. W. van Lunteren from Eck en Wiel achieved to breed a real dream horse in one generation by breeding with a modern stallion like Doaitsen. Sanne ended up at the top placing in her category one yr olds. For the Championship, the best trotting models Peta T. (Thomas x Djurre) owned by C. Talma Oldeberkoop and Aukje fan Fjildsicht (Fetse x Jurjen) owned by Okkema from Witmarsum were invited.

Heartbeat

The election of the new models was as always a true thriller, especially for the owners. Mustn’t they listen to the seconds tick slowly by as there hearts beat away with a heart rate of 200 beats per minute… Most of the owners have planned out a real battle plan for their mares. They have invested... Already have a good test result with the mare, or a great IBOP, skipped the foal for a year and then superbly trained and fit for battle. And then you hear the speakers calling out your number… your blood is churning! Nine ster mares ware pronounced definite model last Saturday. Two preliminary. The breeding plan seems to have adapted a bit. High scores were given to the ones which scored high in the standard of the Friesian type, modern horses with lots of front and presence. Inspector Harrie Draaijer explained: “These mares are as type and built in the FPS breeding plan. They belong to the top of the FPS”. In other words, the time-honored ratio 40 exterior : 60 movement isn’t as actual any more. Lots of mares did indeed score high on exterior.

The new additions to our elite mares are:

Adelheit (Leffert pref. x Oege pref.), expressive, luxurious and noble. Lots of mane, tail and feather. Sporthorse. (dressage)

Afke fan Panhuys (Jasper x Tsjerk), Jasper’s second model this year (Mrs. Arlene de Boer in the US is the lucky owner of a new Jasper modelmare!), also very successful in the dressage, strong mover and “look –at-me” type.

Birthe M. (Jurjen x Oege pref.), champion of Oldeholtpade keuring. A superb mover, a true model mare.

Anke fan é Greidhoeke (Ritse x Nammen), Type is very impressive, almost stallionlike, great height, front and composure.

Dryske fan de Slachtedyk (Teunis x Djurre), long toplined model, excellent mover! One of a kind.

Tonne Boszorg (Fetse x Piter), modern mare (Full sister to modelmare Setse Boszorg) can drop behind and rise in front.

Xandrina von Marschhorst (Brandus x Gaije), extraordinarily  beautiful, perfect example of the breed.

Wimke fan Noarderein (Leffert pref. x Dimer), preliminary model, full sister to approved US stallion Heinse, big and impressive type. Front en mane, tail en feathers.

Janke-Tina van de Zuiderwaard (Oege pref. Hearke pref.), long topline. Awesome Trotter. Great breeding too.

Tsjikke van de Sjongedyk (Tsjerk x Oege pref.) preliminary model, Royal horse, pose and spacious movements. One of my favourites this year.

Wynanda fan Toerenburg (Folkert x Jurjen), a little stocky, but with extra presence and a flashy trot with the so wanted ‘sparkle’.

This year, the KFPS has been extremely well stocked with extraordinary horses. In the WTC (formerly the FEC) in Leeuwarden, Friesland’s capital, it receives the air it deserves. But with a yearning I sometimes look back at the time that you could roam through the cattle halls during the breaks where the participants waited. The trophy winners were simply tied up, a simple jute blanket over them, the participants sat cosily together on plastic chairs drinking coffee together. A chat here, a pat on a model mare’s nose there. Stamboekhengst Reitse is led quietly to the sjees. But nowadays it’s more professional, more separate from the public which is a pity at times. What doesn’t change is the moment of the national anthem! What a powerful horse is that of our Friesian horse!
